Retiring? Consider Moving to the South

Due to real estate prices on the rise on the western side of the United States, many people are choosing to move east. States like Alabama, Florida and Tennessee are happily welcoming homebuyers and the real estate market is thriving.

Of the people moving to Eastern states are those who just retired and have decided to move into a senior living community. Once they sell their home in California, Oregon or Washington, these individuals are flush with cash and are able to purchase new homes.

Home Prices Are Less Expensive

The average home price in the Southeastern United States is 12% less than that of California. This is due to a number of factors, including the cost of living and the availability of land. Where land is sparse in California, there are wide open lots available in many rural and suburban areas in the East.

The cost of living, including fuel, groceries and utilities, is substantially less compared to other areas of the country. For this reason alone, many people are retiring and heading east.

Retiring in Tennessee, Alabama & Florida

The South moves at a different pace than the western US and is typically more relaxed. For many older individuals, this is the perfect pace.

Florida

Florida is a very common location for people to retire to. Sunny beaches, cocktails by the pool and all-around good temperatures are just a few of the reasons it’s a popular spot. But Alabama and Tennesse are also high on the list of retirement destinations.

Alabama

Alabama is home to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, which is a collection of 26 championship golf courses. These courses are spread across the state and offer something for everyone. If you’re not a fan of golf, there’s plenty of other activities to keep you busy, including fishing, hiking and bird watching.

Tennessee

Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State and is home to many historical landmarks. From the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg to Graceland in Memphis, there’s always something to see and do. The cost of living is low and the scenery is beautiful, making it a perfect place to retire. In fact, Tellico Lake, located in Loudon County, is one of the premiere 55 and older communities in Tennessee.

Why Move After Retirement?

Once you retire, you finally have the chance to move wherever you want to. You’re no longer tied to a job or a location. This newfound freedom can be liberating and allow you to explore new places.

Of course, there are many practical reasons to move after retirement. You may have family in a different part of the country, your home may be too large now that you’re downsizing or the weather may be more to your liking in a different part of the country. No matter what your reason for moving is, consider the southeastern United States as an option. The cost of living is low, the weather is great and there’s always something to do. Plus, you’ll be joining the thousands of retirees who have already made the move!
